Dear Hall,

RECEIVED 13 MAR 1951 COLONIAL OFFICE!

4, MILLBANK,

WESTMINSTER,

LONDON, S. W. 1.

(ABBEY 7730)

12th March, 1951.

I am writing in reply to your letter No. 54510 of March 5th about the Netherlands Harbour Works Company in Hong Kong.

We have enquired of Messrs. Coode, Vaughan-Lee, Frank & Gwyther, the Consulting Engineers who specialise in Harbour Work, Reclamation, etc., and they are not aware of any other Civil Engineering Contracting firm operating in Hong Kong or the Far East to the same extent as the Netherlands Harbour Works Company, or who might be able to execute such a diversity of work as that firm undertake.

They understand that Messrs. George Wimpey and Company Limited are doing certain works in Hong Kong. This firm operates from Singapore as a base. They have done a considerable amount of work (not necessarily in the Far East) on Airports and foundations for sea-walls, but have undertaken a relatively lesser amount of dredging operations.

Messrs. Coodes think the there may be United Kingdom firms who would be interested in work in Hong Kong but it would first be necessary to put specific proposals to them.

There are also American firms in Honululu, but, with dollar currency restrictions, these are not likely to be of assistance.

H.P. Hall, Esq.
